In today’s tumultuous economy, many individuals are searching for ways to save money. Almost everyone knows the basic tips for saving money such as switching to a less expensive car insurance company, cutting back on eating out or clipping coupons. However, the following examples are some outrageously crazy ways people can save money:
Become a freegan:
Although not considered a valid way to live by mainstream society, the freegan movement has gained some momentum in the last decade. To become a freegan means to become a cheap vegan. Most often, freegans obtain their food from dumpsters or by crashing weddings or other social events at which free food is served.
Purchase plants that are less than healthy:
When a person wants to create a beautifully landscaped yard without spending a fortune, they can invest in some less than stellar plants from a nursery. In the ideal situation, the plant will become rejuvenated and thrive under the care of its new owner. In the worst case, the plant will not ever revive and end up a loss. However, because the purchase price is so cheap, it is a worthwhile gamble to make.
Ditch the house or apartment:
Another extreme way people can save money today is living in their cars. After all, housing costs make up the vast majority of expenses for most individuals. For those living alone, residing in their car is doable. However, they should remember to keep moving around town to various locations so they do not arouse any local authorities’ suspicions.
Shop for insurance:
When changing your life style you may want to consult your physician, financial advisor and your insurance agent. You may want to shop around for life, health and car insurance in order to maximize your savings. Some insurance companies offer discounts when combining policies or buying in bulk.
When living off the grid, families are without phone, internet, cable, gas, car, electricity or housing bills. In addition, most food it grown independently, meaning trips to the grocery store are not required. Most off-grid living structures can be constructed for less than $500 making them an affordable alternative for those wishing for a change in lifestyle.
Becoming an at-home hair stylist:
Individuals seeking to save money can also begin cutting and styling their own hair. There are many hair clipper kits available with a variety of upfront costs. However, the savings individuals will gain from skipping the salon is great. Women can even do their own at-home hair coloring, as today’s kits are viable alternatives to a salon job. For one person, doing his or her own hair can result in saving around $200 a year minimum. For women who go to the salon more frequently and spend more at each visit, the savings gained is even greater.
Many people searching for ways to save money wish they could go without eating. After all, so much money is spent just to keep food on the table and in the pantry. Although going without food altogether is impossible, for a short period of time, fasting is a way to save some money. Instead of fasting for a whole day, individuals can attempt to forgo one meal such as lunch in an effort to save money. However, individuals with health issues should not attempt this tip.
Water down drinks:
Many families find they spend a small fortune on drinks for their household. Kids love apple juice and other yummy juices, which adds up in cost when they chug them down like there is no tomorrow. One-way to make the drinks last longer thus saving money is to water the drinks down some. However, individuals must make sure to not over water the drinks or they become undesirable. The idea is to slightly water down the drinks leaving the taste still intact yet making the drink stretch just a bit further than it otherwise would have.
Keep the dryer off:
Instead of using the dryer to dry clothes, a great way to save energy costs and thus money is line-drying clothes. If families are not bothered by outdoor allergens, the clothes can be dried via a clothesline outdoors. However, if individuals are susceptible to allergies or the climate is not befitting to outdoor drying, drying lines can be added into a laundry room for drying clothes. The best way to create this indoor clothesline is hanging long closet rods along the sides of the room. Using these drying lines to dry heavy and bulky laundry such as quilts or jeans is a great way to save energy and limit dryer usage.
The tips above vary from way over the top like living in a car or dumpster diving to the semi crazy like biking to work. However, each one is a unique and obscure way to reduce costs and create more financial margin within a budget. The only question remaining is their individuals brave, or crazy, enough to try them?
